Last Friday, Newell and I sat with WBFO’s Mark Scott for Buffalo Rising’s weekly Round Table. There was a lot to talk about Obama’s upcoming visit and the Farmers Market opening. But, Brad Wales of UB’s Small Built Works made the grade yet again with the recent addition of the handcrafted benches to 18th Street Community Park. You’ll also hear a little talk about the recent piece suggesting another Ring Road, but this time at LaSalle Park. And of course, we spend a moment discussing Newell’s eco-friendly haircut. Thank you for joining us for this week’s Buffalo Rising Roundtable on WBFO. …

So we hear President Obama is coming to town, and our first thought when we heard this was—where will he eat? Okay, so we’re admittedly a little single-minded over here in the Dining section, but with so much good food to eat here in Buffalo, it’s a thought that is weighing heavily on our minds. Our predicament is: Do we take the President to sample some of Buffalo’s quintessential blue collar cuisine with deep roots in our region’s ethnic foodways, or do we want to show off our bright and sparkly fine dining establishments? Is it a question of proving…

I held this asparagus up to the sky in order to improve the background of my photo, but it was also a slightly triumphant moment. Not that I have any real right to feel a sense of triumph regarding asparagus grown not by me, but by friend and farmer Daniel Oles. But there is something innately celebratory about that first bunch of spring asparagus. This year it’s coming in early, a good sign for our growing season if the frost stays away. For the last month I have gorged myself on ramps, where each garlicky bite tastes of renewal and…

We’ve tried to incorporate many of the comments we’ve received over the last few days into images that accompany this slideshow. There is a music accompaniment, so adjust your computer’s volume accordingly. Suffice it to say, the event seems to have been a great success, and everyone who sent in their opinion or images to Buffalo Rising raved about what a good time they had. I do think I appreciated the scale of Artists & Models more when it was at the Central Terminal in 2008, but the turn out for Saturday’s show was excellent and it was fun to…

Last night’s Artist & Models: Stimulus event had Buffalo’s arts community atwitter. For the last few weeks, speculation on the installations and the other evening entertainment have been the subject of much anticipation and conversation amongst artists, musicians, students and party-goers. So I got to thinking about how fun it might be to develop an installation of our own, per se. This ode to the event would be an online installation where people who attended Artists & Models: Stimulus took part in crafting the piece.I am going out on a limb here, because of course, we could end up with…

I never know what’s next with cake artist Zilly Rosen. For years she turned out some of our area’s most inventive cakes from the tiny kitchen at Dolci bakery. When demand grew, there were signs that she would open her own shop with rumors of a cupcake bar. This magical bakery opened on Elmwood almost a year ago to great success, but during the time it took for her to secure her building and finalize her business plan, she became an overnight media sensation. Her all-cupcake homage to then presidential hopeful, Barack Obama, was all over the papers. Rosen’s cake…

It’s that time of year again. We know it’s a difficult thing to do, to eat a lovely meal with friends, knowing that a good portion of the check will go to support AIDS research and support services. But we ask that you find it within yourself to endure such a hardship tomorrow night as part of Dining Out for Life. In all seriousness, this national fundraiser has made great headway since it was first organized in 1991. Today it raises nearly $4 million dollars in a single evening, with over 3,5000 restaurants involved across the country. More than 100…

After following the latest happenings on Amherst Street, I pretty much figured that I had the beat of the neighborhood nailed down. There were new galleries, up and coming restaurants, buildings bought and buildings sold… lots of activity these days. So to find that there had been serious music recording and production studio rising to the surface while the rest of the street was starting to hit its stride… well, that was a surprise. It was an even bigger surprise to learn that the interior facilities have been a ‘work in progress’ for the last 20 years. Alan Dusel, owner/Director of…

As we reported a week ago, Western New York is in the flush of ramp season. After the story published, I was impressed by the number of readers who emailed me to tell me that they had taken my advice and picked a bundle for themselves.
One reader added a post script, “But now what do I do with them?” So we called Chef Mark Camalleri of 31 Club (who you may recall from the feature story we wrote last year.) Chef told us that he had just added fresh ramps to his menu the week before. “We only change…

With all of the people asking, “What are you doing for earth day?” a few of us decided to push the envelope a bit further this year. After recently meeting with Tom Suffoletto, VP of Buffalo Greenworks, it was decided that, regardless of size, Buffalo is in need of a green (energy) demonstration park. As luck would have it, we were meeting at Five Points Bakery when the plot was hatched, and if you’re familiar with that intersection, then you know that there is a parcel of land across the street that is, at this point, underutilized. It was also…
