We all know how lonely the holidays can be lonely for some people. Fortunately there are friends right around the corner – furry friends who are in need of homes and good families to take care of them. Your care will come back in the form of purrs!Mama Hyacinth (1.5 year old grey tabby) was left behind when her owners moved. She was VERY pregnant and had her babies under a neighbor’s hyacinth bush. The neighbor called Second Chance and we came out and scooped up mama and her 1 day old babies. They are now 3 months old, loving,…

By Trudy Stern:My mother Lorraine is 92 years old. Her age is news in itself. That she is healthy and smart and vibrant is more news. At her age (she says) she only chooses to do things she really wants to do or to see people she really cares about. That includes seeing sister Suzi (in Austin, Texas) sing at late night jazz clubs and to join me for our special Saturday Opera and Dinner dates. The NYC Metropolitan Opera Company is the only opera she cares to attend. As an ex pat New Yorker and a trained soprano, Lorraine is…

The first of two exciting additions to the Elmwood culinary scene has opened. Tuscany on Main is filled with all sorts of edible delights that can be cooked and eaten at home with little fuss. This is the perfect type of place to pick up a delicious dinner on the way home, while also enjoying a dipping oil or two as you’re whipping up a pasta dish. There’s even a section of chocolates for that special person who is always in need of a sugary pick-me-up after dinner. I spoke to owner Jim Maloney who was happy to answer a couple…

Submission by Ryan Mooney: There is a murderer holding our city hostage. Lead paint in houses is killing parts of the city of Buffalo. This often-overlooked concern is destroying the futures of many citizens of the city. There are 36 zip codes in New York where citizens, especially children, are considered to be at a high risk for lead poisoning. Eight of those are in the city of Buffalo and are designated as “communities of concern.” Indeed, we should be concerned. Statewide, 95% of all new cases of hazardous blood-lead levels occur in Buffalo. It is time that the state…

By Nate Drag:Living on the shores of Lake Erie, it is easy to take the Great Lakes for granted. While Lake Erie often means beautiful sunsets, beach visits, and lake effect snow in our daily lives, it is important to remember that the Great Lakes also contain approximately 20% of the world’s available freshwater. As part of its Fluid Culture series, the University at Buffalo’s Humanities Institute is helping our community remember just how fortunate we are in Western New York to have such an amazing resource in our own backyard. Last evening at 8 pm, global water rights activist Maude…

The wait is finally over and Spot Coffee has opened its doors on Hertel. As I sit here sipping a cup of coffee along with approximately 30 fellow patrons, the scene is reminiscent of other Spot locations with familiar sounds and sights. From the shouts from behind the counter announcing the various order fulfillments, to a large mural depicting a Hertel street scene, Spot Coffee has introduced a thriving ‘people hub’ to North Buffalo. There are some differences that the Hertel cafe features, which separate it from the rest of the locations. The floor plan allows for an extremely family-friendly vibe.…

I always like to hear that businesses are working together. Usually it’s through a business organization or association, though in some cases two or more owners will come together due to extraordinary circumstance. That’s what happened when two relatively new businesses on Elmwood Avenue decided to help each other in ways that they could not do on their own. The display window that you see in the photo belongs to Chow Chocolat. What’s unusual is that the display in the window was created by Sue Morreale at Lotions and Potions. Here’s how this came to be…Sue was looking for some…
