Hundreds of Buffalo State students will receive the “red carpet” treatment during the annual EOP Honors Convocation at 3:30 p.m. today in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall. The event’s red carpet décor and theme—“Imagine, Believe, Achieve: Taking Success to New Heights”—is fitting, as students are given every opportunity to shine. Currently, 861 students belong to the Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program, an undergraduate college admissions and support program for students facing economic and academic challenges. Most not only overcome the odds; they eclipse them: 411 students will be recognized for having attained a 3.0 or higher grade…

For almost 10 years, Agent Me has been rocking the local Buffalo music scene. The band’s first record on Good Charamel Records (Robbie Takac’s indie label) is called Consolation Prize. The album is an intelligent blend of contemporary rock and alternative styles that speaks to the angst carried by teenagers and young adults. Consolation Prize opens with “Invincible,” which is an incredibly radio-friendly track. The theme of a relationship gone wrong works well with the moderate tempo, 4/4 beat and minor chords. The next song is called “IT” and wouldn’t sound out of place in a romantic teen-comedy along the…

One of the most revered artists in recent Buffalo memory, Ani DiFranco has done a lot for the city. One of the most remarkable feats she’s performed was saving the former Asbury Delaware Church from likely becoming empty plot of land and transforming it into Babeville – a live music venue and the home of Difranco’s label Righteous Babe Records. It took almost 10 years of work to complete the project, so the grand opening was marked with a pair of filmed performances by DiFranco and her touring band on September 11 and 12, 2007. “Live at Babeville” isn’t just…

Local hip hop artist Edreys Wajed has been working hard at making a name for himself, and that work is starting to pay off. Edreys was featured in the “Now Hear This” section of Billboard Magazine’s March 22 issue and the video for his song “I Like It” is being featured by BET. Edreys said he was very excited about being featured in the magazine. “I ran right out to Barnes and Noble and they didn’t have it yet. So I went over to Borders and they only had three copies, so I bought all three copies. You know, one…

Hero Design Studios isn’t your typical Buffalo shop. The storefront is adorned with toys of super-deformed rabbits and other trendy Japanese toys, looking more like someplace you’d find in Tokyo instead of the Nickel City. The impossibly-shaped denizens behind the glass beckon all who walk by to enter, and those who do are in for a visual treat. Hero, as it turns out, isn’t just about Kid Robot or Gorillaz figurines. Hero is a DIY design studio with music at its heart, created and fueled by the passion and talent of its three artists. Mark Brickey opened Hero’s boutique on…

I made some kaleidoscopic images of Buffalo buildings. I thought they would be fun as a quiz on BRO. Some are easy while others are tougher. Can you guess which building this is by just examining the detail? I used PaintShop Pro software, which has a kaleidoscope feature. I plug in variables such as how many sides the shape should have (2-20) and the scale, that sort of thing. Since it samples and repeats a small part of the image it takes some trial and error to get interesting results, but it’s hypnotic… I’m always interested in how architectural elements…

I guess it all depends on whom you talk to when it comes to the type of winter that we had this year. Some people will tell you that there wasn’t enough snow while others will say that we had plenty for their liking. Personally, I look back and think that we only had a handful of days when the snow accumulated enough to break out a shovel. That’s why I really enjoyed this weekend. When I look outside and see the drifts I think about all of the heavy winters that I enjoyed as a kid. Instead of hiding…

Michael Gainer of Buffalo ReUse has just had his profile featured in New York Times Magazine. Just last week my sister called me from Boston and asked whether I was familiar with Michael – it looks as if his business has not just taken off locally, it is gaining recognition outside the area as well. Obviously there are other cities around the country that can learn from our fellow Buffalonians. This morning I happened upon Peter Panepento’s blog called Outside Erie and the question arose whether Erie, PA should be looking to host an Erie Homecoming similar to what Buffalo…
