Come on Buffalo! We can do it! Are you ready to take back the Metro 10 cup?
On Saturday, August 19, runners from Buffalo face off against our neighbors to the east in a fun 10 mile or 5 mile multi-surface race. Every runner’s time counts. Choose the city closest to your heart. Event organizer Thom Jennings says, “the runners choose which Metro area they want to represent, we call it the ‘metro closest to your heart’ because some people grew up in one area and may have moved to the other etc.”
Last year Metro 10 sold out with 300 spots reserved a month in advance. This year Jennings, along with team captains, Marissa Pace (Buffalo) and Vickey Beaver (Rochester) have released over 400 participant spots, and expect a sell out in 2017 as well. Early bird rates end July 10, so act fast if you want to compete.
The participant cap is in place to guarantee a smooth event, Jennings said, “One of the best pieces of advice I received was to always make sure you plan your race to please the last person crossing the finish line, not the first. I remember one time when I finished a race they had run out of water and didn’t have any shirts left in my size. I never forget that when I plan the Metro 10.”
In addition to expecting 400 participants, Metro 10 has a strong presence of runners from a national veterans organization called Team RWB. Their mission to enrich the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity.
Proceeds from this event also go to benefit The Warrior House of WNY. A 1500 acres farm located in Orleans and Niagara County that dedicated its land for hunting geese, ducks, turkey, deer, and pheasant. Hunts are organized for veterans and their families. Warrior House also works with local officials to provide temporary housing for homeless veterans.
Don’t want to run or walk? Join the after-party, cheer on the participants, and find out who takes home the cup! The after-race party will include beer, food, and live music from national recording artist and Buffalo Native, Preach Freedom (from Rusted Root).
