Have you ever wanted to see the hidden underbelly of the Richardson Olmsted Complex? Well, now you can thanks to a new set of guided site tours being led by experienced volunteer who will take you through the wings of the building, to see the historic kitchen, the old dining hall, and other places of interest that have been shuttered away from public view (and completely untouched) since the 1970s.
Buildings that have never been open to the public will now be featured on public and private tours.
Now that the administration building is functioning, there are even more, further reaches of the complex to explore. From the stunning architecture to the landscaped grounds, to the mental care history of the building, tour participants will be given an in-depth look at the site, in a fascinating up close and personal light. Depending on the tour, visitors (and photographers) will be able to learn about everything ranging from patient life to the Olmsted landscape.
The Patient Life Tour focused on the stories of the people who lived and worked at the former Buffalo State Hospital.
Learn about the history, and the reuse project, and how the two intertwine. The tours will be divided into:
- Two-hour In Depth Tours
- Twice-monthly One-hour Welcome Tours
The tours will be conducted May through September. Registration is required and tours are limited to 20 people per tour. Tickets may be purchased at www.richardson-olmsted.com starting today.
For those who can’t make it to one of the public tours or are looking for a more intimate experience, the Richardson Olmsted Campus offers private tours for up to 20 people.
