Rigidized Metals CEO Rick Smith recently landed some print in The New Yorker with his grain mill complex, Silo City. Writer Lynn Freehill-Maye spent some time with Smith down at the site, and came away with a glimpse into the past, present and future of the industrial playground. From an abandoned parcel of land, to kick starting a cultural movement, where people and groups continue to experiment with the property, Smith has certainly made some headway since taking over the reins.
According to Freehill-Maye, he has watched from afar as other cities have experimented with the monoliths, only to incrementally push forward in his own grassroots way. Every year, there is more and more interest in the silos, especially with the burgeoning Buffalo River, RiverWorks and a couple of high profile nearby developments underway.
