We live in a day and age where drivers are no longer just daydreaming when they get into accidents, they are actually tuned out altogether. AT&T research shows that 7 in 10 people engage in smartphone activities while driving. That’s a very scary statistic. It’s a wonder that drivers aren’t careening into buildings left and right. Scratch that. Distracted drivers are careening into buildings left and right.
Drivers are checking email, posting to social media, snapping selfies, video chatting and also playing games like Pokémon Go.
Throughout the course the day (Wednesday, July 20 – from 10:30 am to 6 pm at Canalside) concerned parties will be demonstrating the It Can Wait 3D virtual reality simulator called “pit stop”, which raises awareness for AAA’s 100 Deadliest Days for Drivers. Summertime is the time when teen drivers are most distracted. Teens believe that they are invincible when they get behind the wheel. They are raised with smartphones in their hands, and feel that they must engage with friends at all moments via social media.
When you’re behind the wheel, everything can change in the blink of an eye.
AT&T will be joined by Erie County Clerk Jacobs, Canalside, New York State Police, and AAA Western and Central New York, as they put drivers in the virtual driver’s seat, while testing their ability to multitask.
