Well, here we are after 3 pre-season games and sitting in a position that not many would have fathomed a month ago. All 3 QBs in the race for starter have performed admirably thus leaving the coaching staff with one heck of a decision to make today. As far as my line of thinking, Matt Cassel is STILL 3rd in the pecking order. I don’t care how much more experience he has over EJ and TT, he brings absolutely nothing to the table when it comes to defenses planning against him. He is the only QB of the 3 that hasn’t produced a single point in these games (and yes, I am aware he has only played in two).
I have said that if Tyrod can make the throws Cassel has been asked to make, you have your answer. Not only has he made those same throws, he has been executing plays that Cassel won’t even attempt. Add in the element of escapability while creating first downs with his feet, and you have a guy who is very tough to stop. With each game Tyrod has played this Summer, he has taken a giant step forward and that is EXACTLY what we want to see right? He has stayed in the pocket and delivered beautiful passes all around the field. Last night, he was 12 out of 13 with 9 plus yards per attempt and a 20 yard TD run, I think I can live with that.
The BIG surprise that nobody can deny is how well EJ has played through a lot of adversity. I don’t know if a light has gone on but he has shined in an us against the world mentality. He didn’t give up when he was thrown to the wolves against Carolina, he put up some points against Cleveland while delivering some beautifully thrown balls and last night against the Steelers, with his roster spot on the line, he could not have played any better. There was no panic and that ball he threw to Gragg, wow. So let me ask you, would Roman and Rex rather have a guy out there that can only utilize part of the field in Cassel or someone who can get the ball to any playmaker they want? My vote is for Tyrod as starter and EJ as a back-up because I have seen everything I need to out of the Cassel/Fitz/Orton mold. Will this QB decision remind us of the same old Bills, or are they ready to start believing this team can do more than just try land a Wild Card spot…..
