Professional dance is making a big comeback in Buffalo, with myriad dance studios opening in all corners of the city. These days professional dancers can be seen performing at festivals, events, studios and art centers. Each dance troop has its own style, flair and concentration, which gives the community a chance to discover a wide breadth of performances, in virtually any setting – from Silo City to Shea’s.
On October 18, 2014, professional dance company ConvergeDance Buffalo will be presenting its debut concert at the Flickinger Performing Arts Center at Nichols School. Artistic Director Hayley Sunshine tells me that the goal of the performance is to “bridge the gap between art and entertainment”, which tunes people into the fun aspect of the performance. “ConvergeDance is a professional dance company that strives to bridge the gap between art and entertainment,” says Hayley. “With works from both local and guest choreographers that span a number of dance genres including jazz, contemporary, modern, and hip hop, ConvergeDance presents a show that is energetic, elegant, and entertaining. The ConvergeDance performance proves that anyone can enjoy concert dance. Yes, even you!”
Who me? I suppose that I am guilty when it comes to attending my share of professional dance performances, it’s true. If you’re like me, and maybe you have not seen a show of this nature in a while, then consider this your informal invitation to see a troop of professional dancers that will knock your socks off. According to Holly, “We hope to expand the audience for dance in Buffalo and add to the growing performing arts community to create opportunities for dancers and choreographers here in our great city.”
