Uniland Development Company has issued the following statement following an incident earlier this week where glass from the building’s facade landed on a parked car causing over $5,000 in damage:
On Tuesday, June 24, one of the 4,600 panes of glass in the Avant building cracked and small pieces of glass fell onto a car parked in the private parking lot below.
We are grateful no one was hurt. We regret the damage caused to the car and we will assume all responsibility for the cost of repair.
It is important to note that an entire pane of glass did not fall to the ground; the window apparently cracked and “spidered,” and some small pieces fell out.
All of the glass in the building is tempered and dual-paned and meets all industry standards and building codes for tolerance.
Effective immediately Uniland is implementing an enhancement to our preventative maintenance plan whereby visual inspections of the glass exterior will occur daily.
We have contacted the glass manufacturer to seek an explanation as to how and why this could have happened, and we have retained an independent engineer to inspect and provide an analysis of the glass curtain wall. We will take the necessary steps recommended to minimize the risk of this reoccurring.
We have been in contact with the City of Buffalo Department of Building Inspection, explaining the circumstances surrounding the incident and apprising them of the steps we are taking to mitigate future risks. We will continue to keep the City informed.
