Buffalo is known for its wings, of course. But as of late, it has become apparent that there are two varieties of chicken wings that this city is becoming famous for. There’s the “original” Frank’s RedHot wing, created in 1964 by Teressa Bellissimo at Anchor Bar, and then there’s the originator of the Mumbo wing – John Young – who came up with his recipe in 1960.
While the Mumbo wing eventually fell into obscurity, the Frank’s RedHot wing rose to the top, becoming a fan favorite all over the world. It wasn’t until recently that the Mumbo wing resurfaced, along with John Young’s backstory – thanks to a very curious and persistent wing aficionado by the name of Marc Moscato (Buffalo Bike Tours).
With the help of The MUNCHIES team (Food by VICE), the tale of the Mumbo wing is finally being told in a video format. Along with the history of John Young’s wing, there’s also a deep dive into the actual recipe.
Needless to say, the video is “blowing up,” which means that the story of the Mumbo wing is being viewed by thousands upon thousands of wing fans… who never knew that there was “A Tale of Two Wings” in Buffalo.
