I walked all over the West Side during the Garden Walk Buffalo weekend, taking
pictures of new construction and of houses that were in the process of being rehabbed
or had recently been rehabbed. One of the new construction sites that I found
very appealing was the new wing of the Herman Badillio School on Carolina
Street that is nearing completion.
The
new addition comprises 43,285 square feet. The original portion of the school,
located at 300 South Elmwood and approximately 71,600 square feet, has been
completely refurbished as well, as part of the city’s overall 10-year School
Construction Project. The overall cost is $190 per square foot for the new
School 76, as it is also known. The school is scheduled to reopen this
September, three months earlier than originally planned.
With
the expanded facility, what has been a 3rd-through-8th grade school will now be
a pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade elementary school because of its
absorption of the School 36 Bilingual Education Community School at 10 Days
Park. The new facilities will double Herman Badillo’s enrollment to nearly 900
students.
