Halloween is a time of year when we actually seek out scary things. Some people like to head to haunted houses, while others attend giant events like The Witches Ball. But for those who are looking for something a little bit more relaxed and cerebral, Westminster Presbyterian Church has got you covered. For a special Halloween treat, the church is offering a showing of the original classic silent horror film, “Phantom of the Opera,” accompanied by live, improvised organ music, on Friday, October 26, 7:30 PM, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 724 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, NY.
The 1925 black and white film is one of the most elaborate productions of the silent movie era.
Along with a classic horror flick, and accompanied by live, improvised organ music, guests are encouraged to dress up, to add some extra spice to the cinematic/musical affair.
Organist and choirmaster, Garrett Martin, will be playing Westminster’s historic Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ with an improvised score, making for a very gripping scene. Rarely do we get a chance to participate in such an unusual undertaking. Not only is this setting ultra unique, so are the rest of the otherworldly components.
“This is a unique cinema experience, pairing one of the greatest silent films with an impromptu organ accompaniment,” says Martin. “The cinematography of the film together with Westminster’s colorful, rich, pipe organ will capture the moods of the film.”
This program is supported by the Westminster Friends of Music. Admission is free, with donations gratefully received to benefit the Westminster Friends of Music. For more information, call 716-884-9437 or visit www.wpcbuffalo.org.
