Nothing speaks of “old world comforts’ more than a glass of finely aged liquor and the traditional letterpress printing process. The combination of the two evokes days of yore, when artisanal printing was considered a skilled trade. You know… before computers, when people worked with movable type (no, not the Movable Type content management system) to publish books and newspapers. Those were the days when communication was more of an art form.
The mainstream use of the letterpress system faded away with the advent of the computer (in the 70s), but interestingly enough, as big business ditched the dated, pricey equipment, it became affordable for artisans to acquire, opening the doors for the general public to get their hands on the craft print process (learn more here).
The highlight of the evening will include letterpress demos on antique presses led by WNYBAC volunteers and members. Guests are encouraged to participate and create an assortment of hand-printed ephemera to take home.
Thankfully, letterpress is still around today thanks to organizations like the WNY Book Arts Center (WNYBAC), which are dedicated to preserving the artisanal printing technique. That’s another great reason to support the upcoming Liquor & Letterpress event.
