Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church is seeking Preservation Board approval to demolish a commercial building at 270 William Street. The masonry building is located on the north side of William between Bennett and Cedar streets, south of the church.
A Building-Structure Inventory Form says the structure dates from 1878 and is described as “two-story Italianate Style. Gable roof. Two round arched windows in gable have continuous stone sill. Second floor has round arched window opening and continuous stone sill. 1st floor storefront has cast iron pilasters, transoms, and wood paneled door on right.”
The church does not provide a justification or engineer’s report in its application. Photos show a deteriorated wood-frame addition on the rear but no visible signs of extensive issues with the historic portion of the property. It is one of the last commercial buildings along this stretch of William close to downtown.
