On Saturday, September 22 (at 11:00 am), the Buffalo Maritime Center will be welcoming Olympian & World Champion rower Emily Regan, who will be speaking as part of the center’s fledgling Speaker Series.
Regan, who hails from Buffalo, didn’t start rowing until she picked it up in college as a freshman – Michigan State in 2006. And she picked up the sport with a vengeance. Since that time, Regan has gone on to compete and win medal after medal, including…
- 2010 placed first (gold) women’s eight, World Rowing Championship
- 2011 placed first (gold) women’s four, World Rowing Championship
- 2013 placed first (gold) women’s eight, World Rowing Championship & set new world record
- 2015 placed first (gold) women’s eight & women’s four, World Rowing Championship
- 2016 placed first (gold) women’s eight, World Rowing Championship
- 2016 won gold medal women’s eight, Olympics in Rio
Aside from her college coach, Matt Weise, Regan lists her greatest influencers as her parents, who supported and encouraged her throughout her journey, which continues to this day, as she trains with the National Rowing Team in Princeton, NJ. Regan also looks up to sports legends Billie Jean King and Serena Williams as her own professional role models, because they opened up many doors for females to advance in the world of competitive sports.
Now, Regan is putting some time aside to speak to rowers, athletes, women, young people, and anyone else who is looking for inspiration from such a talented role model. Her biggest takeaway is that it’s never too late to learn something new, and excel at it. For so many people, picking up new hobbies, careers, relationships, etc. is extremely hard. Often times it boils down to being open to new opportunities, and dedicating one’s efforts and time to reaching new goals. This sentiment can apply to any goals, no matter how incremental or lofty they may be.
