Last September I got a chance to tour a new printmaking studio in North Buffalo that was unlike anything else I had ever come across (learn more). At the time, the three owners of Mirabo Press discussed their visions for the future, some of which were still unfolding. While this complex would not necessarily be open to the public on a regular basis, it would serve as a venue for some unique workshops. One of those workshops – Hand-made Paper Lantern – is being held a few days from now, on Saturday, February 16.
Lighting can be tricky. As much as there are millions of different lamps to choose from, it can be tough finding something that speaks to you. There’s a lot of really bad cookie cutter stuff out there, that is mass produced, and has no character.
For the first time that I’m aware, there’s an opportunity to design patterns, and fabricate your own lantern, thanks to the guidance from instructor Mizin Shin.
“Participants in this workshop will design and draw their own patterns, use the paper-cutting machine to cut out the lantern shape, and then fold their designs into contemporary paper lanterns.” – Mirabo Press
Tools & Materials included:
- Paper
- LED light bulb
- Lamp base
- Paper Cutting Machine
