Get ready to laugh, Buffalo! Comedian and Actor JB Smoove is coming to Buffalo State University on Saturday, October 3 at 7:00 PM. Tickets are available here.
Smoove has been to the Queen City before and is looking forward to coming back. “I’m really excited about going to Buffalo,” he said, showing off his sense of humor and play, adding, “I love Buffalo. I used to do a club out there, man, and the club was right next to where they make the Cheerios. Oh, yeah, Nothing better than being on stage and you smell Cheerios…I bring a travel bowl and a spoon with me every time I go to Buffalo.”
Audiences will recognize JB Smoove from his Emmy-winning work on Curb Your Enthusiasm, as well as his roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Spider-Man: Far From Home. A comedian, actor, writer, and producer, Smoove has also appeared in The Millers, Uncle Drew, and The Last O.G. He currently hosts Hell’s Kitchen and continues to tour with his stand-up comedy.
As a stand-up comic, JB’s mastery of physical comedy and his ability to embody the stories that he tells have earned him the title of a “comedian’s comedian,” and Smoove remains committed to the art form.
“I do think we’re going into this realm of technology. But when you look at it – the true essence of what comedians do is never going to get old. It’s always going to be – people want to get out. People want to put their phones down, and people want to laugh, and they want to be in the moment with you, which is never going to go out of style.”
Smoove knows people attend his comedy shows for an authentic connection beyond what they can get at home and online. “You’re in a moment with people, man,” he said. “You’re in the moment with them. And they’re there for a reason. They could have IMDB’d you. They could have went on their computer and watched old videos of you doing standup. But no – they want to be in a moment with you. And that’s what is genuine about standup…. Of course I have written stuff, but I also like to be in a moment with people. Some things only happen one time. Some things only happen exactly like that once, and you saw it.”
That connection with the audience often extends after Smoove has completed his set. “If people are standing in line to buy merch and meet me, I meet every last one of those people,” he said, playfully adding, “And sometimes someone – I don’t know if they’re lying or not – sometimes they’ll say, ‘Hey man, my dad’s in the hospital. Can I call him on FaceTime right now? You’re his favorite.’ I say,
Call your dad.. I say, Prove I’m his favorite by calling him right now. And I’m going to ask him, who’s your favorite? And he better say me.
For people who might be on the fence about attending his show at Buffalo State, Smoove urged them, with a twinkle in his eye, to “Get your weird a** to this show. You’re gonna never see another JB – I promise you that. If you love me on TV, if you love me on all the things I have done, you’re gonna love me live…Comedians earn their laughs because they show up for you… I’m going to give you 200% every time. You’ll never see JB half speed. You’ll always see me at full speed – in the moment with you. We’re having a great time together. The more I get from the audience, the more I give. And there’s something really cool about that. And I like to see people have a good time.”
