Author Mike Rizzo has announced that he is releasing his latest book, titled “A Book Named Goo: The True Story of the Goo Goo Dolls.”
I reached out to Rizzo to ask him about the biography, which he says, is a comprehensive account of the history of the Goo Goo Dolls.
What time period does the book cover?
I focused the book on the early years, when the Goos played with dozens of punk and hardcore bands. It was fun and I realized I missed a lot growing up just being a metal head. I’ve since bought albums from some of those bands.
What makes this book truly unique?
To start with, I spent a couple hundred hours building the most compete gig history there is. Then I contacted several hundred people for the book, many from bands the Goos played with. Surprisingly, many responded.
What can you say about the band’s fans?
One of the most interesting things I found while researching, was that everyone in Buffalo is very protective of the band. I was told by one person that they created that with their fans and those close to them.
Was there an “aha moment” when researching for the book?
I was surprised that Mike Malinin (drummer of the Goo Goo Dolls) said “Hold Me Up” is the best record they ever recorded.
Anything else?
Many people donated photos for the book, which was really appreciated.
