The City of Buffalo Department of Public Works (BDPW) is asking the public what their thoughts are pertaining to a proposal to re-configure access to the Gates Circle roundabout. Obviously, something needs to be done at this intersection, as there are constantly cars ramming into the circle. Also, there are serious safety concerns for pedestrians and cyclists attempting to navigate the circle, and access the circle.
In recent weeks, preliminary concept plans have been circulating throughout social media channels. In these proposals, Chapin Parkway is disconnected from the circle, which has raised some eyebrows from a lot of people. At the same time, anything this drastic is sure to raise some concerns, warranted or not.
The difference between the two plans is that A) Pedestrian access to center is from mid-block (Chapin Parkway on one side, and Canterbury Woods on the other), and B) Pedestrian access to center is from splitter islands located along Delaware Avenue.

Now, BDPW is seeking input from the public about the Gates Circle Roundabout Project. The department has set up an online query page, hoping to get some input from those that utilize the roundabout.
The City of Buffalo Department of Public Works is in the Design Development phase for improvements to Gates Circle. This includes potential pedestrian, vehicular and bicycle improvements. We would like to learn more about how you interact with Gates Circle, and collect your input on the preliminary concepts presented at the July 22, 2026 public input meeting.
We will use the results of this survey, along with input received during and after the July 22 public input meeting, to revise the preliminary concepts. Updated concepts will be presented at the next public input meeting this fall.
