In recent years, we’ve been hearing all sorts of rumblings about the possibility of resurrecting the STR Columbia, the sister vessel of the once-heralded and now-vanquished passenger ferry SS Canadiana. In order to understand the prominence that these ships once held, it’s important to better understand their history.
While the SS Canadiana is now long gone, there is still hope that one day we might see the STR Columbia resurrected. But that will only if people feel a connection to the ship. And what better way to form a bond than listening to those who have fond memories of the vessels themselves. Further consider that the STR Columbia is the last remaining excursion steamboat in the US, and even serves as a reminder of the struggles of Black activists such Sara Elizabeth Ray, who continued to encounter blatant racism post-segregation (learn more).
