When we think about the dynamic theater scene in Buffalo, some of the heavy-hitting theater troupes come to mind. These are the practiced troupes who have dedicated their lives to acting, and who have spent years honing their craft so that they are readily received and recognized in acting circles.
There is, however, a younger generation of budding actors and actresses who are in the process of attempting to get a foot (or even a toe) through the door of the WNY theater scene. In order to do that, they must acquire the skills that they need prove that they have what it takes to not simply participate, but shine.
That’s where The Room Theatre Company comes in. Owner/Director Annalise Casciano is dedicating her time to teaching young up-and-coming singing, dancing, and acting enthusiasts a range of crafts that will help them to pursue their theatrical passions, while having some fun along the way.
The Room not only provides the training that students need to advance in the industry, it also produces impeccable shows that spotlight the actors and actresses in ways that they could never previously imagine. In 2022 and 2023, The Room produced the following musical theater productions: Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr., Tinker Bell, The Wizard of Oz, and Alice in Wonderland.
According to Casciano, The Room is in place to allow students to explore their talents, while building their confidence both on and off stage. This is done by offering acting classes that lead to parts in musicals and plays, which can lead to more advanced performances with signature theater and dance troupes.
Casciano, now 22 years of age, has been studying theatre since middle school, where she was ultimately given the position of Student Director. These days, she participates in both community and professional theaters, while running The Room. According to Casciano, her superpower is to give every student a chance to be in the center stage spotlight, no matter their abilities. She feels that every learner has the ability to grow into a confident performer, which is why she dedicates equal amounts of time to each and every student. That type of one-on-one dedication is what makes The Room so unique, according to Casciano.
If the proof is in the pudding, then the accolades from doting parents should be considered, with one saying, “I want to say how impressed my family and I were with everything you did with these kids. You are an incredibly talented woman and such an inspiring role model for our children. My mom and I teared up as we saw (student) take her bow – being a part of this cast has been an incredible experience for her and us. I just wanted to let you know how impressed we are with you and to make sure you know how grateful we are for all the hard work you put in with the kids.”
With responses like that, and plenty more where that came from, maybe it’s time for Casciano to take a quick bow, before she sets out on her next teaching excursion, that might bring forth Buffalo’s next brightest star.
