The Tool Library has announced that it is supersizing into a new headquarters at 2626 Main Street (from 5 W. Northrup Place). Their new high profile “dream home” will double their floor space while providing for plenty of storage opportunities. The organization will also have:
- Space for in-house workshops and meetings
- A full, dry basement for all their storage needs
- Transit access via the Amherst Street Metro Station
- A dedicated on-site parking lot
- Their very own pocket park
This is big news for the volunteer-powered nonprofit tool-lending library that has accumulated over 4600 tools that are available to its members. Not only does The Tool Library provide low cost access to some fine tools, it provides a number of opportunities for people to learn how to use the tools properly. From screwdrivers to sanders, members have access to equipment that they might not otherwise be able to afford or obtain. Plus, what’s the point of purchasing a tool if you’re only going to use it a couple of times? The Tool Library lets people access the tools that they want, for the time that they need them, at an affordable borrowing rate (a small annual membership fee).
The average power drill is used for less than 12 minutes over its lifetime.
Throughout the year, The Tool Library hosts a number of Dare To Repair Café events, where volunteers help the community to fix their broken household belongings. Instead of buying new stuff, community members are encouraged to fix the items, with the help of the volunteers.
The Tool Library also plans to start their workshops back up in the new space… something that hasn’t occurred since the pandemic.
Have you ever heard of the sharing economy?
The move to 2626 Main Street will allow The Tool Library to spread its wings, and stretch further into the community. Not only will this help people to repair their homes, it will also benefit the planet, as we have become accustomed to living and working in a “throw away economy.”
The Tool Library will be moving in June of 2023.
