How Will You Spend Your Summer?
You’ve probably heard the saying that the best boat to enjoy is owned by someone else. Owning a boat requires many responsibilities, time, and money. It’s one of the reasons that so many people count on sailing groups such as the Buffalo Harbor Sailing Club (BHSC) to get them out onto the water.
Each year, BHSC offers the Discover Buffalo Sailing program, which, incredibly, only costs $75 (orientation takes place on April 20: register here). The program – held on four consecutive Saturdays between May 13 and June 10 – includes a weekly one-hour dockside session followed by a 3-hour sail on keelboats mentored by club members.
US Sailing has identified this program as the only one of its kind in the US.
Over the last ten years, Discover Buffalo Sailing has graduated over 450 sailors. That means that there are a heck of a lot more sailors out and about on Lake Erie each sailing season. While many of those sailors enjoy the casual nature of sailing, there are others who seek out the thrill of racing. That’s why, in July, Discover Buffalo Sailing provides sailors with an opportunity to learn all about the ins and outs of racing via the program Learn to Race.
“Your boat and your crew will race with a club mentor in the RCR / Tuesday night racing series. A 3-hour dockside session will familiarize people with the rules of racing. A mentor will get sailors comfortable on the race course in an active race environment. Get more use out of your boat, enjoy the crew camaraderie of this team sport, and test your skills against other racers. Dockside session takes place on Monday July 10. Racing commences on July 18 (register here).” – Buffalo Harbor Sailing Club
