A new mural by Adeyemi Adegbesan (aka Yung Yemi – Toronto, born 1982) can new be viewed at 1410 Main Street. The mural – titled Queen City – was commissioned by the Buffalo AKG Art Museum. The work was inspired by “a diverse array of local creators in the fields of poetry, literature, music, and visual arts,” according the Gallery.
The mural depicts a strong sense of Afrofuturism, as it relates to three Buffalo women that Adegbesan selected as inspiration for his subject matter – Annette Daniels Taylor, Jillian Hanesworth, and Curtis Lovell. These women not only represent strong Black voices in the community, their accomplishments are bonded to the voices of past Buffalo heroines, such as Mary B. Talbert and Minnie Gillette.
This Queen City tribute is a daily reminder that there are those among us, who have the ability to affect real changes within our community. They are the inspiration for future leaders, just as they have been inspired by those who have come before them.
The Public Art Initiative was established and is supported by leadership funding from the County of Erie and the City of Buffalo.
