By now you’ve probably heard about the Providence Farm Collective. This is the collective that provides farming resources (including land) to refugees, as well as other underserved members of the community (learn more). It’s also the organization that has set up a Saturday farmer’s market on Grant Street that allows the farmers to sell their produce to the community (learn more).
Now, there is an opportunity at hand to tour the farmlands, which is considered the heart of the program. Anyone interested in seeing the initiative firsthand, by visiting the 37-acre farm on Burton Road in Orchard Park, is welcome to sign up for a guided tour on Saturday, September 17 at 10:30am (prompt, so arrive a bit early). The tour will be an opportunity to learn the backstory on the farm, as well as hear stories from the farmers themselves.
Anyone that attends the event is asked to bring a donation of shelf-stable food for the farmers and youth lunch program: dried pinto beans, dried black-eyed peas, basmati rice, orzo, coconut milk, olive oil, canola oil.
Important Information:
- Upon arrival, park along the road
- Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes that you do not mind if they get dirty
- The tour is approximately 90 minutes long, with a lot of walking and standing
- You will be in the sun for much of this time. Please wear sunscreen and/or a hat and bring a drink or water bottle
Tickets for the free event can be accessed here.
