Groundwork Market Garden is one of the most exciting urban farming initiatives underway in Buffalo. I wrote about the urban farm in 2020, when they first introduced their 60K square foot Teachout Building. Not only is Groundwork Market Garden a wonderful place to visit, it’s also a great place to attend a community event.
On Saturday, May 14 (10am – 2pm), Groundwork Market Garden is hosting its second annual plant sale – a free community event featuring free seedlings (with limits) and a seedling sale at the farm.
Groundwork Market Garden offers a wide variety of certified organic vegetable, herb and flower plants for sale.
“Especially over the last few years, we’ve seen the cost of food going up and the fragility of our food systems,” said Mayda Pozantides, Co-founder & Farmer at Groundwork Market Garden. “Building local food security means supporting area farms, and also encouraging individuals to grow their own food at home. You can buy a quart of tomatoes or a tomato plant for about the same price, but one will give you food all summer long. There is a joy and a sense of independence in that, and that’s what we want to share.”
Pozantides also wants people to know that you can purchase your vegetable and herb plants with SNAP benefits. The event will host a number of partners including Put a Plant on It who will be selling houseplants, Field and Fork Network who will be signing folks up for Double Up Food Bucks, a NYS program that matches SNAP benefits dollar for dollar on purchases of fresh fruit and veggies, at participating locations. Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardeners will be offering free pH soil testing, and attendees are encouraged to bring a soil sample. There will be a number of other community organizations with kids activities, information and resources, live art, food, music and more! A full list of partners can be found on the event FB page and flyer.
Attendees may pre-order their plants for pick-up at the event. A full list of what’s available can be found at Groundwork Market Garden’s online store.
“We will have our certified organic vegetable, herb, and flower seedlings for sale- as well as a number of activities and offerings from our amazing partners. There will be food, music, live art, info for growers, resources, etc. Thanks to the generous support of our Councilmember Mitch Nowakowski we are also able to offer free organic tomato and pepper plants to our attendees.” – Groundwork Market Garden
