There are a few days left to catch CEPA’s installation of “The City and its School” – the culminating efforts of University at Buffalo’s Venice Biennale entries in 2018 (See It Through Buffalo) in tandem with a more recent exploratory contribution – “Buffalo Constructing Buffalo: From Olmsted to Van Valkenburgh.” Both exhibition components “…explore the urban landscapes of Buffalo and the School’s work within them over the past 50 years.”
The show has been extended, and now runs through May 19!
For anyone who has been following the shifting-forward landscape of Buffalo over the last few decades, this is a chance to take a closer look at the inner-workings of the efforts between the City, UB, planners, architects, developers, and the community. Further opportunities at hand are also considered.
The presentation showcases decades of planning, design, and ‘doing acts’ in the city and region, led in part by faculty, students, and Buffalo citizens. The latest exhibition element (Buffalo Constructing Buffalo) is the byproduct of UB’s engagement of more than 2,000 citizen voices per the planning of Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park – a project that will help to change the face of the waterfront, from the relatively ignored LaSalle Park, to one that will be a celebrated destination once it is built (construction is set to commence in 2022).

“Buffalo Constructing Buffalo: From Olmsted to Van Valkenburgh, featured in the 2021 edition of ‘Time Space Existence,’ is a visual narrative interpreting the civic planning process behind the park, the foundation of city plans that informed it, and the best practices research that inspired it.” – University at Buffalo
As for the cinematic aspect of the exhibition – “See It Through Buffalo” – The 17-minute film debuted in Venice, Italy, in 2018 for the Time Space Existence exhibition at the Venice Architecture Biennale. It was co-produced by the school with noted Buffalo filmmaker John Paget of First + Main Films and directed by Professor Greg Delaney.
^ The documentary short and cinematic tribute to the varied urban landscapes of Buffalo is the byproduct of an effort by UB faculty and students, who worked alongside the community to address issues pertaining to energy-efficient design, economic development, food systems planning, and affordable housing.
“A City and its School” runs through May 19 as part of CEPA Gallery’s “Celebrating Erie County” exhibition marking the county’s bicentennial. A closing reception is being held this Thursday, April 28 at the gallery, from 5 – 7:30 pm.
