Back in June of 2020, photographer and gallerist Michael Mulley wrote a heartfelt piece about the passing of fellow photographer and “friend to Buffalo,” Kenn Morgan. At the time, he wrote:
“Losing a person like Kenn Morgan is especially painful because there was no else like him. He was an original old school shooter. He inspired me and many others to keep doing what we love because he kept doing what he loved. I for one will keep expecting him to walk through the door (six pack in hand) and that smile on his face. Long after the great Art industrial complex has crumbled and the gatekeepers run from their hallowed halls there will still be a photography student that remembers Mr. Morgan.”
It’s true. Life in Buffalo is certainly not the same since Kenn’s passing. The guy was everywhere. He was at all of the gallery openings, supporting fellow artists. He was also a welcome figurehead at festivals, where many of the artists and other ‘imaginative folks’ congregated. Kenn managed to capture an artistic aspect of Buffalo that might have otherwise gone unnoticed.
“He documented the art scene with an intensity that would tire a younger person,” Michael wrote. “At every art reception he was omnipresent, clicking away and creating a collection of literally thousands of photographs that eventually would find their way back to the people in them, I know because the stack I accumulated is probably a foot high.”
Now, Michael is preparing to exhibit the aforementioned photographs:
“Here is a small celebration of our friend, photographer Kenn Morgan who left us in 2020. Thanks to Broadway Market Director Kathy Peterson, several hundred of Kenn’s photographs from Buffalo’s Dyngus Day Parade from 2017 and 2019 were found, and I picked the best ones to display as part of my ongoing Broadway Market Photo Project. Join us Saturday April 9, from 12-2pm for a get-together to celebrate Mr Morgan. The exhibit is located at the front for the market located 999 Broadway.
