It’s no joke that men have had the upper hand in comedy circles in years past, but that’s all about to change in Buffalo thanks to the inclusive efforts of Green Buffalo Productions (GBP). The team of young professionals – working in theater, art, and creative writing – is preparing to launch a new comedy series that will help to cultivate a more well-rounded, female-forward production atmosphere in WNY.
GBP’s three main objectives are:
- To foster the creation and production of original works of theater
- To provide opportunities for marginalized writers and performers by remaining accessible and encouraging
- To enrich the community through meaningful collaboration
Along with advocating for advancements in the realm of comedy, GBP also intends to bring attention to these underrepresented voices in the region by producing new works of theater, while providing resources for unpublished writers.
“Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the GBP team was attending comedy shows in Buffalo, often to support our favorite comedians (and GBP actors) Rachael Tschari and Katarina Valentine,” says Co-Founder Ellen Scherer. “And historically, women have been underrepresented in the comedy community. We decided to start an all-women contest off the heels of Women’s History Month. Women are funny too and we want to showcase that.”
GBP Queen of Comedy was developed to create a welcoming space for women in the Buffalo and Rochester comedy scene.
“We are so excited to give women a fun space to perform together! It’s also super fitting for us,” says Co-Founder Madison Sedlor. “Ellen, Rachael and I all met during an all-female production in college, so we decided to bring that back in our own way.”
The new comedy series – hosted by Rachael Tschari – is set to kick off at Nietzsche’s on Saturday, April 2, starting at 8:00 PM (doors opening at 7:30 PM). Not only will the show be a real hoot, it will also be an excellent opportunity to network.
