The future of Scajaquada Creek is on a lot of people’s minds these days. And that’s a good thing, because for the most part, the creek has been hidden away and neglected for decades. But thanks to dedicated groups like Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, the future of the creek looks a lot brighter.
As a way to get the word out about the importance of the creek, Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper is hosting Scajaquada September. Presented by Waterkeeper’s partner, Rich Family Foundation, the month-long event will include:
- An education campaign about the different sections, challenges, and the vision for restoration of Scajaquada Creek
- Tours of the Creek
- A volunteer small group and solo sweep cleanups of the Creek
- A Scajaquada Scavenger Hunt, where teams of families, couples or friends can register to play along with the potential to win fabulous prizes like a canoe or a local gift certificate package
Throughout the month, Scajaquada Creek partners will be enlisting the community to join the charge, to reconnect the communities that are tied to the creek, while further restoring the creek so that it will one day play a vital role in the resurgence of Buffalo (as it once did). The saddest part about the creek in its current state is that few few people are aware of its amazing history – there are integral historic, recreational, and environmental aspects. These stories will continue to be told, in order to get more people hip to the creek’s full potential.
And now, there is finally a much larger picture unfolding, with the advent of the Scajaquada Corridor. Bundled with the future downgrading of the Scajaquada Expressway, there is even more at stake than anyone could have ever imagined.
“Defining moments don’t come around very often – but here we are. This coming year will provide the last, best chance in a generation to reclaim our creek and community,” explained Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper Executive Director Jill Jedlicka. “Many decisions are on the horizon for infrastructure priorities in our region, particularly in the Scajaquada Creek corridor. We can either seize the opportunity now, with the voices, investment and support of our community, or get left behind.”
Scajaquada Creek needs your attention and support to become a healthy, thriving waterway once again!
