Hostel Buffalo-Niagara Bike Breakfast & Kick Off of ‘Give 716’

Buffalo is lucky to have a not-for-profit independent hostel located along its downtown Main Street corridor. This hostel not only offers affordable dorms and private rooms, it also has a laundry, a fully equipped kitchen, a “Free Store,” and an art gallery (called BOX Gallery).

For years, we weren’t sure if Hostel Buffalo Niagara (HBN – Est. 1996) was going to be around for the long run, as its host building was in jeopardy of being diverted to possible outside development interests. But the community rallied behind its beloved hostel, and in 2020 HBN was named designated developer of 667 Main Street/664 Washington Street by Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency (BURA).

This new designation meant that HBN was saved. It also meant that the hostel would have a bright and productive future, with new accommodations, features, and amenities (learn more).

Needless to say, the pandemic caused a slowdown for the business, which typically boasts an economic impact estimated to be between $1.5 to $2.3 million dollars a year.

Now that things are starting to clear up, the hostel is back in full swing, as it is in the midst of seeking funds to renovate the building that it has been leasing from the City of Buffalo for over 25 years.

To that end, HBN is hosting a free Bike Breakfast, for its ‘campaign kick off’ on Give 716 Day. This is the first Bike Breakfast in 2021, and signifies the hostel’s mounting efforts to raise the necessary funds to embark upon its future development plans. It also signifies that people are once again making travel plans, and heading to Buffalo.

“After a difficult year through the pandemic, we are excited for the return of travel in our region,” said Hostel Buffalo-Niagara Board President, Tony Caferro. “We are very happy to provide affordable travel accommodations at this cultural asset in Western New York.”
