Recently I visited The Bird’s Nest Circus Arts and was amazed while watching students accomplish relatively simple moves in the beginner class I attended. I could only imagine what the professional performers must look like. If you’re like me and are amazed by the ability and agility of circus arts performers who combine dance and acrobatics with grace and precision, you’ll not want to miss The Circus Grimm: A Tale of Hansel and Gretel, a cirque performance in conjunction with Buffalo’s Curtain Up!
Curtain Up! takes place this Friday, September 20th, and is Buffalo’s annual celebration of the opening of the professional theater season. Each year this major event in our arts and cultural scene is celebrated in Buffalo’s Historic Theater District with a free late night street party on Main Street featuring live music, dancing, street performers, and more after performances have ended, and continues until 1:00 a.m.
As part of this popular Buffalo event, The Bird’s Nest will present, The Circus Grimm: A Tale of Hansel and Gretel that will take place this Friday, September 20th, through Sunday, September 22nd at The Birds Nest Circus Arts, located at 64 Fillmore Avenue near Larkinville. This particular performance, apart from others, features an enchanting retelling of the classic Grimm Fairytale, Hansel and Gretel, through a reconceptualized cirque performance. The production includes live circus acts of aerial hoop, aerial silks, dance trapeze, acrobatics, hoop dance, and more.
During the show you can catch up with Hansel and Gretel on their journey to return home after being carelessly abandoned in the woods. According to The Bird’s Nest, “This tantalizing take on traditional tales follows our floundering fellows into the enchanted Black Forest, where they encounter the familiar faces of Cinderella, Rumplestiltskin, Little Red Riding Hood and more. We welcome you to come enjoy an enchanting night of your favorite fairy tales reconceptualized, lightly plagiarized, and fully acrobatized.”
The performances will take place starting at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, September 20th and 21st, with doors opening to the public at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday September 22nd, at 2:00 p.m. with doors opening at 1:30 p.m.
Watch flying artists during this exciting and unique live cirque performance while celebrating and supporting the arts and culture that is thriving in Buffalo.
