Extinction Rebellion Buffalo

This past Saturday, activists met at Elmwood and Bidwell to express their concerns for the fate of the planet. The message was simple – we have 12 years or less to make drastic, sweeping changes, or life as we know it will be adversely altered in ways that we cannot even imagine.

Saturday’s rally/gathering started with a funeral to mourn the species that have already gone extinct. Then a march was held to emphasize the spirit of change, which should be a priority for individuals, families, groups, businesses, and governments.

Over the last 3 months, Extinction Rebellion has established groups in over 35 countries, and 30 US cities.

“We have come to a climate emergency. The latest science says we have 12 years or less to make drastic changes to avert catastrophe. Embedded in the word emergency is “emergence”. This is the opportunity for something beautiful and new to break through the crust of the old. We have a chance to transform everything to create a more beautiful, free and just world. This will take great courage and bold action. The time is now.” – Extinction Rebellion Buffalo

The demands of Extinction Rebellion as XR Buffalo is articulating them:

  1. The Government must work with the media to spread far and wide the latest science about the environmental crises we’re facing.
  2. The Government must enact legally binding policy measures to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 with WWII-scale climate mobilization and a just transition to build a regenerative culture to draw down carbon and heal ourselves and our eco-systems.
  3. Create structures to give real power to the People to enact these changes and ensure true climate justice is achieved for even the most vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Saturday’s event was considered Rebellion Day 1: Declare Climate Truth! The gathering/rally, funeral, and march was intended to get people thinking about the pending consequences, if we continue to go down the same roads that we have been traveling. It was also meant as a day of recruitment, to get as many people behind the initiative as possible, and to grow the movement throughout the world as quickly as possible.

Diana Strablow of the Sierra Club Niagara Group says, “Decades of denial have brought us to this frightening moment of climate crisis. With glaciers melted, sea levels and temperatures on the rise, we are already living on a changed planet. We call on our leaders to mobilize, with truth and science guiding urgent action that is equal to the real crisis we now face.”

Extinction Rebellion (XR) began in October 2019 in the UK.

Geo Hernandez of PUSH Buffalo and NY Renews says, “In this time of grave desperation to save ourselves and all else that is natural from the detriments of climate change, we must hold ourselves and our elected officials accountable to doing the work necessary to ensure not only survival, but a just transition into the future. We know that transition is inevitable, but justice is not. Therefore, we as the state of NY, must pass the Climate and Community Protection Act to ensure just that: a Just Transition.”

“We’re just getting started, so these actions are building the base. But we’re facing extinction, so we know that nothing short of mass mobilization will save us.” – XR Buffalo
