I have traveled to dozens of American cities. It’s a bit of a hobby that I like to indulge when I can get away. Most cities I have visited are older historic cities of the midwest, south and east. These legacy cities, of course, all have a wonderful heritage of historical architecture and each has its fair share of extraordinary church buildings. Even small historic cities and towns are endowed with at least one substantial church building.
Based on my not insignificant travel, I can confidently claim that Buffalo’s collection of churches is rarely matched by any other place in America. The density, size, quality, and architectural variety of churches in Buffalo is truly extraordinary. It is a heritage that is really something to behold and should be protected as a regional priority.
There are many kinds of churches ranging from ultra grand to quite humble. I have represented the whole spectrum in this gallery. Often churches come without a tower, but the tower is the architectural element most identified with churches, so we will focus here on the beauty, craft, and grace these church towers bring to Buffalo. The towers come with all kinds of variety built in stone, wood, coper, and glass. Some soar while some are squat. There is one in South Buffalo that is actually quite comical in its diminutive proportions. One tower represented here, has sadly lost its church but still stands proudly over its domain. A few of these towers may soon lose the battle to remain standing if something is not done soon.
So, enjoy this photo essay. These beautiful objects are a gift from the past. Don’t take them for granted.
