Patrick Foran’s State of Exception @ 500 Seneca’s Main Lobby Gallery

Thanks to all of the ongoing hard work of art advocate Tina Dillman and the Cass Project, the 500 Seneca Building in The Hydraulics, near Larkinville, is home to an exquisite art gallery. The Main Lobby Gallery is located in the renovated and refurbished historic F.N. Burt Paper Box Company – a gallery setting that is unparalleled in Buffalo because of its industrial past. The mixed-use building is also home to restaurants, businesses, and residential. But it’s the grand lobby that is the real inspiration, drawing everything together in an impressive scale that most buildings simply don’t retain. That alone makes the 500 Seneca Building the perfect setting for art shows, which are held throughout the year, curated by the Cass Project.

The next exhibit to be featured at the Main Lobby Gallery is artist Patrick Foran’s, State of Exception. By using positive and negative fields, Foran examines the underbelly of mass media culture.

As the artist states, “I’m particularly concerned with the nature of events that occur within the ‘state of exception,’ a permanent or de facto state of emergency in which laws are suspended, personal freedom curtailed, and sovereignty eclipsed by the state’s desire to maintain control and authority.”

Patrick Foran is an artist and teacher in Buffalo, NY. Originally from Michigan, he studied English and Visual Studies at Cornell University (MA) and Art and Visual Studies at the University at Buffalo (MFA). His work has been shown recently at Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center, El Museo, and Canisius College. He teaches studio art and writing courses at the University at Buffalo, SUNY Fredonia, Niagara Community College, and Niagara University.

The artist will be giving a short artist talk during the opening reception at 6:30pm.
