You ‘DO-NUT’ Want To Miss This

Fall is officially here and we ‘DONUT’ know about you, but there’s one particular food that we always associate with this season… warm, fresh donuts. Before going vegan, our weekends would consist of taking a drive to Mayor Brother’s Cider Mill and getting a couple donuts to be washed down by a gallon of apple cider. Nowadays, the apple cider is still okay in our book but donuts… not so much. The average donut contains three of the ingredients that we shy away from… milk, eggs, and butter.

But to our relief, there is such a thing as a vegan donut and YES…they exist right here in Buffalo NY! Luckily, those ingredients are easily replaceable with vegan friendly substitutes such as almond milk in place of cow’s milk and coconut oil instead of butter. Below, we created an easy guide to see what types of substitutes are used for common baking items. All of these are quote unquote {healthier} than the standard American donut.

So we set out to find these outliers within the donut world and came up with 4 locations right here in and around Buffalo, and we are so excited to share them with you all.  No matter where you work or live within the Queen City, we have all the bases covered including northtown, southtown, and urban locations. We even added a popular Canadian spot right across the border, so there’s really no excuse to not get your donut fix this season!

  1. 96 Lives Vegan Bakery & Café – Southtowns 34 Central Ave. Lancaster, NY 14086 This was the only bakery where we knew for sure that we could get our fall-themed donut dose. On the day we went in, they had fresh apple cider donuts served with complimentary apple cider. It was like reliving our past all over again and the donuts absolutely satisfied our obsession. If you’re not into donuts, they have a whole array of vegan goodies ranging from cupcakes to egg sandwiches – all vegan of course!
  2. Dragon Babies Diner & Grill – Northtowns 452 Oliver St. North Tonawanda, NY 14120 This isn’t classified as a bakery per say but they do offer vegan donuts so we had to add them to the list! What’s unique about their donuts is that the middle pieces are included so you get an extra nugget of goodness. They always have many unique flavors, which can be typically found on their Facebook page.
  3. Fry Baby Donuts (photo inset) – Allentown 336 S. Elmwood Ave. Buffalo, NY 14201 Let’s just all take a minute to appreciate their display. This is truly something out of a vegan dream. They have your classic donut flavors and some pretty innovative ones as well like hibiscus lime and dirt with worms. You’re just going to have to get a whole dozen for yourself in order to find what your taste buds approve of!
  4. Beechwood Doughnuts – Canada 165 St. Paul Street. St. Catharines, ON L2R 3M5 Last but not least, if you’re in the mood for a bit of a road trip across the border to Canada, check out Beechwood Doughnuts which is the only vegan bakery in the Niagara Region. Beechwood Doughnuts are so delicious that their lines end up out the door, we can testify to that. But the drive through customs and long lines are definitely worth the wait!

Dragon Babies Diner & Grill

Tucked away in North Tonawanda lies a small diner known as Dragon Babies Diner & Grill. Don’t let the name deter you from stopping in to this local hotspot for a bite to eat, which is extremely vegan friendly. Their options range from vegan donuts, textured vegetable protein stuffed tacos and even sloppy joes! It is most definitely a place to get your vegan comfort food fix and while you’re there, head over to The Vegan Grocery Store across the street to do a little food shopping.
