Outbound: PLAY/GROUND @ Mustang City

If you’re thinking that visiting an interactive art installation in Medina might be too much of a stretch, especially after a couple of beers, fear not, because the organizers have enlisted transportation (luxury and school buses) from The Hotel Henry, to and from the event during the preview party (21+ for the preview party – the rest of the weekend is all ages).

So what’s so special about this event, being held at Mustang City – the historic Medina High School (324 Catherine Street, Medina, NY)? For one, there is a litany of artists lending their skills, passions, talents, and expertises to the giant immersive installation.

The 29 artists from the US and Canada are participating in a very unusual art extravaganza. That means that it’s time for a road trip with your friends, because you’re not going to want to miss the wild escapade. Plus, when was the last time that you hopped on a bus to check out an immersive art installation? Everything about this spells F-U-N.

You might recognize the names, but you most likely don’t recognize the venue – Mustang City. That’s what makes this such a trip – literally and figuratively. “It’s going to be wild,” said Mike Hungerford. “Artists started installing last weekend and will be installing until this Thursday evening —  it already looks unreal.”

Sometimes, in order to express one’s self to the fullest, a stage must be set that allows for that to happen. Galleries can be limiting. And the great outdoors leaves artists at the mercy of Mother Nature. But an old high school? Well, that’s completely different.

Audiences of all ages are invited to be transported into fantastic realms of story and exploration.

PLAY/GROUND is being produced by Resource:Art (affiliated with Hotel Henry), in conjunction with Hallwalls, and Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo). Altogether there are 29 immersive art installations, crafted by respected contemporary artists.

“In addition to the immersive, experience driven installations in the classrooms, auditorium, stairwells, and hallways, we’ll be running a series of workshops aimed at kids throughout the weekend. WNY Book Arts Center will be on site running an interactive, super fun workshop for kids. Similarly, Ginny O’Brien is planning another mind-blowing workshop experience perfect for young attendees. Based on ticket sales to date, we’re expecting around 2,500 curious and adventurous men, women, and children. With roughly 500 for the catered preview party on Friday night and 1,000 on both Saturday and Sunday during the general exhibition.” – PLAY/GROUND organizers
