Nerd Scene: Empire Comics

Empire Comics is one of the few, if not the only, comic book shops in South Buffalo. It’s great having one there so the residents don’t have to drive across the city to catch up on their comics. However, it’s much more than just the place to go because it’s close by. It’s worth checking out regardless of which part of Western New York you reside in.

On the outside, Empire Comics appears small, but inside it’s, well… small. Don’t let that fool you, though. Literally every wall is covered from the floor to the ceiling in comic books, collectable figures, and Funko Pops. Plus, there are more cases and shelves separate from the walls showcasing comics and collectables, and there’s a TV playing superhero movies on it.

Even though the space is small and the amount of treasures there is large, it doesn’t feel cramped whatsoever. The space is used wisely. Everything is organized in such a way so that it’s still easy to look around and browse through the various comics. Even the bins for 80s and 90s issues are in little compartments on the shelves and not in the way like I’ve seen in other stores.

Empire Comics may have plenty of collectables to buy, but what they have more of is heart. The store’s owners are some of the nicest one could ever hope to meet. They are especially welcoming and are always excited for conversation with visitors. They absolutely create the best possible atmosphere for the shop, both with their friendliness and with the work they put into it. All of the shelves were made and painted by them.

This is one of the only comic shops that features artwork created by the store’s owner, and you can even buy t-shirts depicting that airbrushed art. They use their business to work with the local schools any way they can. To them, it’s not just about the money. It’s about creating the best possible community for everyone. It is absolutely worth stopping by, whether it’s during a standard day of the week, or during comic book events like Free Comic Book Day, Batman Day, or the always spooky Halloween ComicFest in which the owners donned their Incredibles costumes for the celebration this year.

Empire Comics may be small, and only have street parking, but their heart, collection of comic books and figures, and their people-first philosophy make them a priority comic book shop to visit in Buffalo.
