The Underground has officially reopened. The beloved downtown gay bar closed this past April, when the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) refused to renew its lease. Word has it that the reason that the bar closed was that HUD has a policy that prohibits bars operating within its properties. It turns out that The Underground actually opened before the building became a HUD property, which may have been the golden ticket for the club to reopen, as it was grandfathered in.
The closing of The Underground was probably the best thing to happen to the establishment. The time off meant that there was a chance to get the bar shipshape with a designer paint job, some new lighting and sound, and pink felt on the pool table. All of the refresher updates bode well for Buffalo’s oldest gay bar, which had its big reveal this past Friday.
On Saturday, October 13, The Underground will be hosting a Grand Opening Celebration, from 9pm to 4am. You can check out this Facebook event for further details.
