This past Saturday, at Music is Art, artists Rob Lynch and Matt Sagurney completed another giant mural project. You might recall that their previous MiA creation found a permanent “perfect” home at Oishei Children’s Hospital (see here). The mural was hung in the hospital’s Pathway To Healing hallway, so give ailing children inspiration whenever they passed by.
It’s the same drill for the new 30′ x 5′ mural – the artists are willing to let their latest creation go to a good home for a decent price. The biggest requirement would be accommodating the mural on a large enough wall. And hopefully there is some sort of public element involved, as these works of art can be very inspirational when set in the right locations. They are colorful, whimsical, and ever-inspiring.
“We really draw from iconography that is deep within,” said Lynch. “Things acquired during our formative years in the 70s and 80s, plus our art school experiences where we formed a friendship and began to collaborate. We tend to be drawn to nostalgia and the absurd – poking a bit of fun along the way. The mural is a pure improvisation and visual conversation between us. We begin without any plan, and react on the fly to what the other has put down. It is a wonderful way for us to work, as we are comfortable with each other’s styles and opinions.”
Lynch and Sagurney are probably the only two artists in the country that paint while dressed in suits and ties.
This latest mural endeavor took the two artists nine hours to complete. This time around they documented the process by setting up a time-lapse camera – the video can be viewed above. As I watched the video, I noticed that two words were painted on the mural – ‘Easter Eagle’. I asked Lynch if that was the title of the piece. “No, just some strange phrase that Matt and I thought we overheard someone say as we were working, and of course we found it hilarious and added it in. This type of painting is like flypaper for ideas and images.”
