Buffalo BookFest welcomes Wayzgoose!

On Saturday, July 8, from 12pm to 5pm, Buffalonians are invited to attend the 6th Annual Buffalo BookFest, featuring the 3rd Annual Upstate Wayzgoose. The modern interpretation of the Wayzgoose is a gathering of folks who love and appreciate the artisan and artistic side of the book, including printing, typography, illustration and book binding. This day-long festival includes free hands-on demos, Book Arts vendors from the Upstate NY region, bookmaking, screenprinting, papermaking, and even an afterparty at The Barrel Factory.

wayzgoose (or wayz-goose, waygoose or wayzegoose) was at one time an entertainment given by a master printer to his workmen each year. It marked the traditional end of summer and the start of the season of working by candlelight.

If you’re a fan of books… any and all aspects of books, then you’re not going to want to miss this free, all ages, family friendly festival. The festival is guaranteed to open your eyes to the art of the book, beyond the story. Come participate in the hands-on demos, or scope out the sensational vendors. This is an indoor-outdoor event that encompasses two floors, Mohawk Street and an adjacent parking lot.

Buffalo BookFest special event highlights:

Steamroller printmaking all day – Heavy Metal meets Big Wood. Artists from near & far have carved giant woodcut blocks to be printed using the awesome power and weight of the most mobile of printing presses: a steamroller. Festivalgoers will have the chance to purchase these one of a kind massive prints and meet some of the artists.

Schedule of FREE Book Arts Demonstrations for all ages including – Origami & Hand-Stitched Bookmaking, Letterpress printing of cards & posters, Screenprinting, posters & t-shirts, Papermaking, Printmaking for kids…

Artist Market and Vendor Fair all day – Peruse through over 30 Vendors specializing in book arts, printing, and handmade crafts. The market will be held on the ground floor of WNYBAC and outside. Guests can browse through a great selection of hand-printed items, bookbinding supplies, paper, new books, and even local publications for sale in an air conditioned gallery. Because of the addition of Wayzgoose to this year’s BookFest, there will be even more vendors, selling goods from hand-printed cards to antique type and presses.

After Party & Kite Flying at The Barrel Factory (65 Vandalia Street, Old First Ward -Buffalo, 14204) – While the day’s activities will all be held at WNYBAC, festival-goers will head over to The Barrel Factory in the city’s Old First Ward for some evening revelry. Join your book-loving friends for dinner & drinks at this fabulous new facility, with opportunities for kayaking, food & fun. There will be a kite flying event with hand-made and hand-printed kites by local and regional artists. Tickets available for purchase at
