Buffalo’s City Hall building has made it on the list of Curbed.com’s The 10 Most Beautiful City Halls in the US. Taking a look at the rest of the City Halls that made it on the list, I’d say that we’re in some pretty good company. The top ten buildings range from historic to ultra modern. The brutalist designed Boston City Hall made it into the top 10, which in of itself is of interest, seeing that Buffalo is currently destroying a significant portion of its brutalist charm.
I also found the exterior of Milwaukee City Hall to be of interest. The building loosely reminds me of what Buffalo would have retained had we not destroyed Shelton Square. Not that the two buildings are identical – it’s more the dramatic presence that the buildings offer to the downtown core. Hardly a day goes by when I am not reminded of the senseless loss of the Erie County Savings Bank Building.
Finally, I liked that Philadelphia City Hall featured some fun public art out in its square. It would be great to see some colorful public art at Niagara Square, which would be of interest to all of the tourists that come to take photos of Buffalo’s City Hall.
