Today marks the opening of the seasonal Downtown Country Market. This particular farmer’s market offers the opportunity for downtown workers and dwellers to source the freshest artisanal foods around. Each summer, Buffalo Place Inc. puts on this spectacular culinary show – 2017 is the market’s 35th Anniversary Season.
The Downtown Country Market is a proud participant in the Pride of New York Program, Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program and the Farmers’ Market Federation of New York.
Aside from wholesome foods, sourced from local farms, the market also showcases a number of progressive “food movement oriented” people and organizations, such as Aunt Connie’s Ed-U-Kitchen and Field & Fork Network. You might remember Aunt Connie from a BRO article that we featured last summer? Connie was riding the new ‘Smoothies in Motion’ bike blender (see here). That same blender bike will be making appearances at the market, so that customers can cycle, and then sip delicious smoothies. To up the ante, Connie will be sourcing the ingredients for the smoothies from the farmers at the market. You will find Connie and her “smoothcyle” on July 20th, August 17th, and September 21st.
Field & Fork Network’s Double Up Food Bucks doubles the value of federal nutrition assistance dollars spent at participating farmers’ markets and mobile markets, helping people bring home more locally grown fruits and vegetables.
Field & Fork Network is in the game of ensuring that everyone, no matter their income, has the same access to wholesome farm fresh foods. It’s a win-win for the shoppers and the farmers. Developing these sorts of relationships between the community and the farmers also means that our hard earned money stays right he in WNY.
