Before arriving to The HORSE Rescue at Do Over Acres, these horses were unwanted and neglected. That’s pretty sad, considering that they probably lived a life of servitude, only to be cast away as they got older. But for these lucky horses, they are getting a second chance to roam free (for the most part), while being taken care of by people who know and love horses.
On Saturday, June 17, from 6pm to 10pm, a benefit for The HORSE Rescue will be held at Knights of Columbus at 1530 Kenmore Avenue. The funds raised at the event will be directed towards enhancing the lives of the horses at the sanctuary.

“The horse rescue and sanctuary takes on horses that are elderly, injured, poorly mannered or even neglected or abandoned,” said co-organizer Jen Miess. “We are in need of rehabilitation funding, to pay bills and possibly have some funds for other needs and repairs at the property.”
The sanctuary is always in need of supplies, including:
- Grooming tools
- English and Western tack
- Horse stall mats
- Heavy duty hoses
- Gas- Diesel and regular
- Pitch forks
- Heavy duty sleds
Without the hard work and devotion from volunteers who keep this horse sanctuary going, these horses would have been most certainly slaughtered, once their utilitarian use to humans ceased. That’s pretty sad and depressing. But thanks to this devoted, horse loving crew, these majestic animals are given another opportunity to live a life free of misuse and poor handling. They are also given the love, care and respect that they deserve.
