Mass Appeal is a part of Make Music Day

2016 marked the first year that Buffalo participated in Make Music Day. The city-wide event was headed up by Arts Services Initiative (ASI). This year, this city will once again play a part of Make Music Day, and event that was first dreamed up in France in 1982 (Fête de la Musique). Since that time, over 700 cities across 120 countries have joined the bandwagon, and today Make Music Day has become remarkable world appreciating day for music.

This year, there is an added component to the celebration, which some cities are just starting to pick up on.  C. F. Martin & Co. (Martin Guitar) and Alfred Music are inviting guitarists from all over the world to play six classic songs and make music together, as part of a Gathering of Guitars. This year’s songs will be “I Saw Her Standing There,” “I Can See Clearly Now,” “Blue Moon,” “Over the Rainbow,” “Theme from New York New York,” and “Margaritaville.” To ensure that everyone has a chance to play these songs, free songbooks will be distributed. Anyone interested in organizing a Mass Appeal Guitar event in Buffalo can email Natalie Brown – natalie@asiwny.org.

The Gathering of Guitars initiative is part of a nationwide Mass Appeal project, where groups of musicians of all calibers get together to play one single type of instrument. In Buffalo, on Make Music Day (Wednesday, June 21, 2017), there is a single Mass Appeal project being orchestrated at this point in time (see here). The effort is a “free harmonica play along”, scheduled to be held at Canalside from 3pm to 5pm on Make Music Day. If you click here, you will see all of the different Mass Appeal events that are taking place all over world, from mass ukulele sessions to percussion to boomwhackers?

It would be great to see a couple more Mass Appeal projects underway in Buffalo. If you have any ideas that you would like to orchestrate yourself, be sure to email Natalie Brown – natalie@asiwny.org – with your mass music concept.
