On May 18, a garden fair will be held at Pelion Community Garden at City Honors. The fair is being orchestrated in order to recognize the importance of School-Garden Month. Twenty public schools in Buffalo will take part in the celebration, which will include a number of family friendly activities such as:
- Grow A Salad
- Petal Rubbing Art
- Hug-a-Bee
- Smelling Tours
- Sidewalk Drawing
- Kids Yoga Challenge
- Bubbles
- The Worm Petting Zoo
- Seed Give-a-Ways
- Outrageous Sunhat Contest (with prize)
Children who work in gardens are more likely to accept people different from themselves (Dyment & Bell, 2006).
It’s so exciting to see more and more gardens popping up at public schools throughout the city. The gardens are proving to be instrumental in teaching kids the importance of:
- Sourcing healthy food
- Working together
- Being outdoors
- Appreciating the environment
- Physical health
- Community benefits
More than just about anything else, students take these lessons home with them. They take what they learn, and apply the lessons to other tasks throughout their lives. Now that alone is inspirational.
