Landies Candies – Growth Surge with Wegmans, Dessert Bar and QVC

Author: Mark P. Lazzara

The holidays would not be the same without chocolate; Landies Candies always has unique confections for gifts. Landies has remodeled its store and added a dessert bar on the third story of the Tri-Main Complex just in time for Christmas. The new space holds many new amenities, including chair-side service, their award winning stuffed pretzels and a wide variety of chocolate bars. Buffalo’s very own winter variety of sponge candy is being hand made behind the shop in the Main Street Tri-Main building.

Larry Szrama, the owner, and his family are thankful for their success and have spent four generations, giving back. This Buffalo based business provides a meal for a destitute family, for each candy bar sold.  The Szrama’s, have been helping families in need for four generations. Larry has watched his grandparents on both sides, as his parents have quietly served their community. Landies has two philanthropic arms – “Pretzels with a Purpose” and a “Meal for a Bar”. Both gives to the neediest families in WNY through the Western New York Food Bank and disaster relief.

Last year alone, even Disney’s super hot “Frozen” sales barely out paced Landies Candies in top sales items on QVC, America’s largest home shopping network. To add icing to that sweet reality, UPS had to engage extra 737 aircrafts to transport the largest QVC shipment in its history: 250 pallets of Landies’ chocolates. All that during their 30th year of service to Buffalo.

Landies is ranked 12 of 50 fastest growing companies in Western New York by Buffalo’s Business First.  Wegmans supermarkets (the 2016 Business First Small Business of the Year) contracts with Landies Candies to be their premier chocolatier, serving all 90 of their stores in Western and Central New York.

We offer a gourmet, luxurious chocolate with old-fashioned, handcrafted taste, cooked in a space-age environment.

Landies has “state of the art” modern manufacturing techniques, which includes pending patents. Larry Szrama states, “We offer a gourmet, luxurious chocolate with old-fashioned, handcrafted taste, cooked in a space-age environment. My plan is to grow in Buffalo and create more job opportunities for my fellow Western New Yorkers, who may be struggling.”

Landies is a certified organic company located in Buffalo’s University District and is positioned now for long-term, sustainable success. Landies has 31 years of outstanding growth and development as one of Buffalo’s leading small businesses. For three years in a row, Landies Candies took a top place on the list of top 50 fastest growing companies in Western New York.

Come try it, every good neighbor “bit” is made in the “Queen City”.

I have a passion for helping my fellow Western New Yorkers and advance the great things that are going on in this region. Buffalo Rising is a great booster and it’s a blast writing and contributing to BR about positive happenings in our neck of the woods. I appreciate the help I’ve received over the years from organizations and people who share my passion and supported me in efforts that put thousands of people to work and resulted in a community give back of more than $115M to Buffalo’s neediest during my days at the helm of AmeriCorps.

I’m especially grateful for the opportunities that enabled me to help cities devastated by Hurricane Katrina and rebuild more than 700 family homes that were destroyed. Back at home, I was able to enjoy a once in a lifetime experience as a coordinator for ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition where we were able to repair, beautify and upgrade homes for an entire neighborhood on Buffalo’s Westside. Other projects close to my heart include a collaboration with Sail Buffalo to build the Cazenovia Boating Center at Buffalo’s Outer Harbor, and my annual Christmas season time is spent at Buffalo’s treasure, the Broadway Market, playing Santa Clause.

In my other life, I am a workforce development, business, marketing, public relations and fundraising professional. Earned a M.S. Human Service Management from Buffalo State, and enjoy my family life that includes four amazing grandchildren!
