Buffalo is gearing up for the start of another great jazz festival. But first, funds must be raised to ensure that it is successful. The Buffalo Jazz Collective, in collaboration with the Buffalo Public Schools, has announced that the inaugural Floyd Fried All-City Jazz Festival will be held on Friday February 3 and Saturday February 4. The fundraiser will include:
- Jazz concert
- Several Buffalo public high school jazz ensembles
- An all-city jazz ensemble
- The award-winning, Mark Filsinger Eleventet
“Our goal is to make the festival completely free for students in the Buffalo Public Schools (students and bands from Hutch Tech, BAVPA, City Honors, South Park, and Olmsted are participating),” said Mark Filsinger, Artistic Director of Buffalo Jazz Collective.
The festival is named after Floyd Fried, father of Andrew Fried – a board member of the collective. Floyd is known as a dedicated musician and teacher whose efforts will forever ripple throughout the community.
The mission of the Buffalo Jazz Collective is to promote jazz throughout the city of Buffalo – in schools, via concerts, and anywhere else that an impact can be made. This city’s strong jazz roots warrant another jazz festival, because jazz is big, and broad, and deserving of more attention from the community.
Students from the Buffalo Academy of Visual and Performing Arts Choir will have the opportunity to perform on February 11th (at the festival) alongside Buffalo Jazz Collective Artistic Directors and special guest, Pete Malinverni. The performance will include the Western New York premier of Malinverni’s, “The Creation”.
The fundraiser, to get this festival off the ground, is being held on Sunday, December 4, from 1pm to 4pm at Flying Bison Brewing, 840 Seneca Street, Buffalo, NY. The fundraiser will include:
- Raffles
- Door prizes
- Live jazz provided by students
- The Brendan Lanighan Quartet
- The Mark Filsinger Eleventet
- First beer is included in the price of admission
Purchase tickets here. $20 presale – $25 at the door.
