When it comes to fireworks, Buffalo is king. Throughout the year, there are countless events that feature fireworks, including baseball games, holiday celebrations, and of course New Year’s Eve.
WalletHub recently released a study that analyzes the best cities for New Year’s Eve celebrations. Buffalo turned out to be #5 in the rankings. One of the reasons that this city is so high on the list is “legality of fireworks*” – Buffalo ranked at the top. That makes sense. Even if you don’t avidly attend events and celebrations that culminate with fireworks’ displays, they can still be heard all over the city loud and clear.
Aside from fireworks, Buffalo’s ranking was also helped along by criteria that included nightlife options per capita, walkability and number of restaurants per capita. This city has been inundated with new restaurants over the last few years, and they continue to open left and right. The breakdown is below:
Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Buffalo (1=Best; 50=Avg.)
- 29th – Lowest Price of a Three-Star Hotel on New Year’s Eve
- 17th – Number of Nightlife Options per Capita
- 13th – Number of Restaurants per Capita
- 16th – Luxury Shopping
- 1st – Legality of Fireworks

In the meantime, be sure to take advantage of this ranking by booking a restaurant, or at least figuring out where you will watch Buffalo’s ball drop.
*The data for the Legality of Fireworks was obtained from the American Pyrotechnics Association. According to their findings – New York allows some or all types of consumer fireworks.
